Every great accomplishment began with the germ of an idea in the mind of a great person, then was shaped for practical usefulness and finally transformed into reality.
George Bernard Shaw said, "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them."
How well said and it is quite apparent, isn't it?
I am sure that every person who discovered this must have believed (atleast for a while) that he was the first one to work it out. We become what we think about.
Conversely, the person who has no goal, who doesn't know where he's going, and whose thoughts must therefore be thoughts of confusion, anxiety and worry - his life becomes one of frustration, fear, anxiety and worry.
If he thinks about NOTHING, he becomes NOTHING.
Why do we become what we think about?
Remember "Thoughts become things"
To do this, let me explain to you a situation that parallels the human mind.
Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.
Out here, we are comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.
Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand - one is a seed of corn, the other is a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds - one corn, the other some poisonous seed. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land. What will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted.
As it's known, "As you sow, so shall you reap."
Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up comes the two plants - one corn, one poison.
The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant (success or failure, a concrete worthwhile goal or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on). But what we plant it MUST return to us.
You see, the human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant.

Make your mind a fertile ground for ideas through constant study and learning, and condition through constant practice to discipline yourself to follow through on your good ideas. The most brilliant concept in the world is only a dream unless you take action.

The Washer man and the Foolish Donkey
Have you heard the story of " The Washer man and the Foolish Donkey" ?
To refresh your memory, and for the benefit of those who have not grown up listening to this moral story,
it goes like this…
There was once a washer man who had a donkey and a dog. One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house, the washer man was fast asleep but the donkey and the dog were awake. The dog decided not to bark since the master did not take good care of him and wanted to teach him a lesson. The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself.
The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly. Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason.
Moral of the story " One must not engage in duties other than his own"
Now lets take a new look at the same story…
The washer man (now, a well educated man from a premier management institute) had the fundas of looking at the bigger picture and thinking out of the box. He was convinced that there must be some reason for the donkey to bray in the night. He walked outside a little and did some fact finding, applied a bottom up approach, figured out from the ground realities that there was a thief who broke in and the donkey only wanted to alert him about it.
Looking at the donkey's extra initiative and going beyond the call of the duty, he rewarded him with lot of hay and other perks and became his favorite pet. The dog's life didn't change much, except that now the donkey was more motivated in doing the dogs duties as well.
In the annual appraisal the dog managed a "meets requirement". Soon the dog realized that the donkey is taking care of his duties and he can enjoy his life sleeping and lazing around. The donkey was rated as "star performer".
The donkey now had to live up to his already high performance standards. Soon he was over burdened with work and always under pressure and now is looking for a job rotation…

Management Lesson
Many years ago in a small Indian village,
A farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender.
The Moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer's beautiful Daughter. So he proposed a bargain.
He said he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his Daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the Proposal. So the cunning moneylender suggested that they let providence decide the matter.
He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.
1) If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven.
2) If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven.
3) But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into Jail.
They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag.
Now, imagine that you were standing in the field.
* What would you have done if you were the girl?
* If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?
Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:
1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.
2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the moneylender as a cheat.
3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.
Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking.
The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses the above logical answers.
* What would you recommend to the Girl to do?
Well, here is what she did ..........................

The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.
"Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked."
Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty. The girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.
I am sure that you would have had various other answers and not this one - but THINK, it was only when we are pushed to think, we would but most of us still would like to come up with the easy way i.e. Option 2, just tell the providences that the moneylender was cheating and close the matter - who knows situation would have worsened. Here the thought was very witty and creative.
We all have that great mind - we need to give time to thinking creatively.
Thus the MORAL of the story is:
Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only that we don't attempt to think.

Do we REFLECT enough
Dear Friends,
I'm just an ordinary person working hard and trying to make each day better than
yesterday. I do forget and I sure don't know all of the answers. And just when I think I have sorted things out - and life is smooth sailing - another "opportunity for growth and learning" shows up in the disguise of a "problem" - Believe me, its the lord who wants us to know that there's more to life and thus wherever we are, whatever we achieve in life, its important we have humility, compassion and we are balanced in life.
Every morning, I read books of inspiration or I write down my thoughts on gratitude or my hopes - and my fears
(Its important to step outside our fears to witness them and know how you unchain ourself from them). Sometimes, I simply sit in silence and envision who I dream of becoming - as a Human and as a Leader- and what should I make of my LIFE.
What I'm trying to encourage you is:
Each day, as we walk out into the world, the world begins to do it's job on us.
What do we see and hear?
* Negative people shout their negative beliefs at us.
* People in fear try to invite us into shared misery.
* Troubling news stories and horrible images are placed front and center on newspapers to get our attention.
* Angry commuters and stress-filled workers find their way into our orbit.
And so we forget.
We forget "The Fundamentals" - basic fundamentals of life
* Like every one of us is meant to be great - in our own unique way.
* Like the stranger walking down the street is just like you: he is someone's child. He hopes for some happiness. He once had dreams. He needs to be loved.
* Like, if you choose, you can make a positive difference at work and in life today, no matter who you are and what you do.
* Like life is good. And we can find joy in the simplest of things over these coming hours. If we have the good sense to focus on them.
I guess what I'm trying to share with you is that each day is a struggle for me (its the same for everyone, I know). I wake up, set my course, fill my thoughts with inspiration, wisdom and good ideas. I try to reconnect with who I truly am and what I want to do/ be. And then..... I walk into another reality of sorts.
* One that entices me to forget.
* One that pulls me to get off course.
* One that suggests that other things are far more important.
* One that makes me forget my own thoughts.
Maybe, this is life. A daily challenge between doing what's right and doing what's easy.
Am I supposed to give up - NO.
But, all I know is that whatever life has in store for me, I got to be positive and proceed towards my vision. What would matter is how strong me and my thoughts stand. The stronger I am, the lesser I would forget - The more I remember, the easier it will get.
Friends, I am sure its not just me - We all go through similar situations but DO WE REFLECT ENOUGH.

Decision Making
Dear Friends,
There is no one right answer - but an endless number of right answers - to most of life's problems. Usually, your options are many and varied; the difficulty lies in choosing the best alternative from among many, all in a reasonable time frame.
If you devote yourself to making small decisions promptly, you will find it much easier to be decisive when the stakes are much bigger. Most important, you'll find making decisions and acting on them far easier if you act promptly.
The man who doesn't reach decision promptly when he has all necessary facts in hand cannot be depended on to carry out decisions after he makes them.

Lets Change
Dear Friends,
Stories does excite and moves us but how many of us také that as learning. I always believed, every story has a moral behind.
This story definitely leaves an impact in the mind and makes us think.
Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn't know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with
water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he
placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot.
He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The
daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.
Turning to her, he asked. "Daughter, what do you see?"
"Potatoes, eggs, and coffee," she hastily replied.
"Look closer", he said, "and touch the potatoes." She did and noted that
they were soft.
He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.
Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
"Father, what does this mean?" she asked.
He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each
faced the same adversity - the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.
The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it
became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.
"Which one are you," he asked his daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?"
Which one are you? When problems come (and they will) how will we react?
Will they make us weak, hard hearted or will they cause us to change into
something worthwhile?
Think about it...
In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.
"Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be."

Stories does excite and moves us but how many of us také that as learning. I always believed, every story has a moral behind.
This story definitely leaves an impact in the mind and makes us think.
Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn't know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with
water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he
placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot.
He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The
daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.
Turning to her, he asked. "Daughter, what do you see?"
"Potatoes, eggs, and coffee," she hastily replied.
"Look closer", he said, "and touch the potatoes." She did and noted that
they were soft.
He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.
Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
"Father, what does this mean?" she asked.
He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each
faced the same adversity - the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.
The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it
became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.
"Which one are you," he asked his daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?"
Which one are you? When problems come (and they will) how will we react?
Will they make us weak, hard hearted or will they cause us to change into
something worthwhile?
Think about it...
In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.
"Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be."

Act on your own initiative but be prepared to assume full responsibility for you acts.
One of the primary differences between those who achieve greatness in their lives and those who manage only to "get by" is that successful people learned early in life that they were responsible for their own actions.
No other person can make you successful or keep you from achieving your goals. Taking the initiative means assuming a leadership role, a position that singles you out for praise and for criticism. The good leader is the one who shares the credit for success with others and assumes full responsibility for failures or temporary setbacks.
When you accept responsibility for your actions, you gain the respect of others and are well on the way to creating your own future.

Thought of the day
Dear Friends,
Read a quote that provoked me a few days back. "Growth is the only evidence of life." Pretty smart words. They came from John Henry Newman. Since then I have been thinking, how to put this across.
You know I adore the whole notion of growth. To me, that's why we're here. To grow and expand through the work we do, the actions we take and the lives we lead (Don't just live your life - lead it).
But the growth that I am talking about is not just the external one but it is the growth from within. We need to be proud of who we are and not what we are - Status, Name and Fame are secondary and there is no meaning to life if we cannot grow internally - the right character, knowledge and attitude is what will help us be better human and it will také us places. External growth happens when you focus on the internal ones.
Growth from within matters. It's what ultimately makes us feel fulfilled. Energizes us (even when it's uncomfortable - and most growth is). Makes us who we truly are.
Hope you just don't read these mails of mine as mere forwards as I believe in sending my belief - these are from the books that I read, quotes from the motivational sites that I get or some which are my versions. There are many things you cannot control, but you can control the only things that really matter: your mind and your attitude.
External forces have very little to do with success. Those who program themselves for success find a way to succeed even in the most difficult of circumstances. Solutions to most problems come from one source and one source alone: yourself.
Living life to the fullest is a lot like shooting the rapids in a rubber raft. Once you've made the commitment, it's difficult to change your mind, turn around, and paddle upstream to placid waters. But it's the excitement and adventure that make it all worthwhile. If you never make the attempt, you may never know the depths of despair, but neither will you experience the exhilaration of success.

IT'S MIGHTY EASY TO JUSTIFY DISHONESTY IF YOU MAKE YOUR LIVING FROM IT
The subconscious mind makes no moral judgments. If you tell yourself something over and over, your subconscious mind will eventually accept even the most blatant lie as fact. Those whose lives and careers have been destroyed by dishonest behavior began the process of self-destruction when they convinced themselves that one slight infraction of the rules wouldn't matter.
When you sell yourself on an idea, make sure the idea is positive, beneficial to you, and harmless to others. Just as negative thoughts and deeds return to their originator, so do positive ones. When you practice honest, ethical behavior, you set in motion a force for good that will return to you many times over.
Lets ask this question to ourselves - Are we really honest?

Effective Brainstorming
Most managers simply herd some people in a room with a flip chart and call it a brainstorming session. Yet there is a definite process that maximizes the size and quality of the idea pool. While there are hundreds of valid techniques for doing this, below are just some of the important concepts leaders should consider.
a) The sum of ideas produced by individuals acting alone is greater than the sum of ideas produced by those individuals acting as a group. Further, the diversity and novelty of ideas produced by individuals acting alone is greater than produced in a group. This means that asking group members to think of a set number of diverse and novel ideas before the session and then repeat the process during the session results in greater total output. Be sure to insist that individuals think of new ideas in the group session.
b) Individuals are prone to competency traps and path dependency. This means that it is hard for them to rapidly frame break unless new experience, stimuli or knowledge is introduced. One solution is to import competencies. Bring in new and dissimilar individuals. Try and ensure these new individuals score high on expression, tacit knowledge and status.
c) Brainstorming usually implies that the solution to a problem is being sought. Thus one good principle is to break the session into three parts – problem identification, idea generation and idea selection. It is amazing how many different perceptions of a problem often exist. Each problem definition generates its own set of ideas. This stage-process allows the separation of creative from critical thinking. Writing and editing are two very different processes.
d) Set incremental goals. Incremental goals produce more output than "do your best." Further, they trigger prolific production; it can be said with great certainty that quality is closely connected with quantity – the single best creative product tends to appear at that point in the career when the creator is being most prolific.
There are at least two types of incremental goal: 1) short term – this forces production of output and 2) longer term – this allows problems to incubate at various cognitive levels and results in the required insight.
e) Foster collaboration instead of competition. Competition causes people to shut down, restricts the flow of information and creates core and peripheral groups. On the other hand, collaboration allows the intellectual cross-pollination that is the raw material for the idea generation process.
f) One of the top idea generation killers is slow or non-existent implementation. People just will not take idea generation seriously if nothing tangible resulted from the last brainstorming session. Ensure direct links to decision makers and visible progression through the innovation process – idea selection, development and commercialisation.
g) Don't rely on "creative types." Everyone can generate large numbers of diverse and novel ideas. Whilst there are assertions that there are creativity traits such as lack tolerance for conformity and tolerance for ambiguity, these theories are questioned on the basis that traits are hard to identify, isolate and are not stable or transferable across situations. Further, other criteria such as motivation and competencies are critical.
h) Think beyond brainstorming. The concept of brainstorming as the only effective method of good idea generation is questionable. Some brainstorming negatives include: 1) dilution of ideas, 2) lower rates of participation from individuals who score low in expression and 3) evaluation apprehension. Idea boxes, idea intranets and knowledge bases are just some methods of maximising the contribution of every individual.

The moment you begin to deceive yourself is the beginning of the decline in your character; it is the beginning of a process of rationalization that permits you to justify unacceptable behavior. Make sure you are a person whom you like, a person of sound character. If you don't like yourself, how can you expect others to like you?
Step back and examine your behavior as logically as possible. Ask yourself, "Am I the kind of person I would like to be with?" Developing good character traits is like achieving any other objective.

If your reputation is for some reason misaligned with your character, it will soon quickly right itself when others discover for themselves that you are not at all the kind of person they had assumed you were. If your foundation is strong, you never need to be concerned about such misunderstandings.
Others will learn soon enough what kind of person you really are. Spend your time and energy in constant self inspection and self improvement, building strong character, and you will never have to worry about what others think of you or fear of what others think.

Thought for the day
Hi friends,
A very good morning to all you guys.
Thought for the day: Some people resemble a cheap watch. They are not dependable.
It would be unrealistic to expect an inexpensive, mass-produced watch to perform with the same degree of accuracy as a finely crafted Rolex. They are not made with the same quality of materials or with the same craftsmanship.
Yet we somehow think that we do not need to give the same attention to our most important asset: 'Ourselves'.
* Don't leave something as important as your character to chance.
* Choose the character traits you admire, and work to develop them.
* Don't be discouraged when you stumble.
Building character is a process that takes a lifetime to complete. Fortunately, like anything else, the more you work at character building, the better you become at it.

'A Leader should know how to manage failure'
India Knowledge @ Wharton: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?
Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973, I became the project director of India's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources, but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.
By 1979, (I think the month was August) we thought, we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts (I had four or five of them with me) told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal. It was a big failure.
That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am, and the press conference (where journalists from around the world were present) was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India].
Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure. He said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.
The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct the press conference today."
I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience

Something very beautiful came across that I wanted to share.
Life gives answers in three different ways.
It says YES and gives you what you want;
It says NO and gives you something better
It says wait and gives you the best.
Thus why crib when Life has only good in store. We tend to expect and thats why we feel let down. Do your best and leave the rest in the hands of the almighty.
Change of perception in life;
* Be positive
* Think only for the betterment of yourself and everyone around you,
* Be sure that whatever happens, there's a reason behind it and it will never be bad.
* Live your Life as if its the last day, you will notice that you will only try to achieve the best and be your best self.
Please share your opinions, agreements,disagreements on the same.

Never Quit
Dear Friends,
Life is beautiful and we still crib about it. Its just being HUMAN and we cant help. Seldom can we think positively when we are crunched in a complicated situation and WE GIVE UP or we blame.
These small stories stands as reminders to us. Whosoever has written it must be having wonderful thoughts. Since I found it good and touching, I thought of reminding all my friends on the same.
There a quite a few stories that I have read or I do touch upon which has made as impact on my life. I would like to share with you guys as well.
NEVER QUIT....
One day a man decided to quit everything... his job, his relationship, his spirituality. He wanted to get rid of his life.
He went to the woods to have one last talk with God. God, he said "Can you give me one good reason not to quit"
God's answer surprised him
"Look around", God said. "Do you see the fern and the bamboo?"
The man replied, "Yes".
"When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo."
God said, "In the third year there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. I would not quit".
God said, "and then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant...But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would
not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle".
God said again, "Did you know, my creation, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots. I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you. Don't compare yourself to others".
God said, "The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come. You will rise high".
Moral: In life never lose hope and never give up or QUIT and Success will come to you sooner or later in life.

Life is beautiful and we still crib about it. Its just being HUMAN and we cant help. Seldom can we think positively when we are crunched in a complicated situation and WE GIVE UP or we blame.
These small stories stands as reminders to us. Whosoever has written it must be having wonderful thoughts. Since I found it good and touching, I thought of reminding all my friends on the same.
There a quite a few stories that I have read or I do touch upon which has made as impact on my life. I would like to share with you guys as well.
NEVER QUIT....
One day a man decided to quit everything... his job, his relationship, his spirituality. He wanted to get rid of his life.
He went to the woods to have one last talk with God. God, he said "Can you give me one good reason not to quit"
